National Railway Infrastructure is defined as the railway infrastructure located within the Greek territory and owned or used by OSE SA as well as any future expansion thereof. OSE SA is responsible for the construction, upgrading and maintenance of the existing railway infrastructure and superstructure, electromechanical systems, signaling, telecommunications and electrification, tunnels, bridges, as well as all other facilities required for the network operation.

A. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RAILWAY NETWORK

The Greek railway network is developed as shown in the following map:

The infrastructure of OSE SA is divided into the following sections:

I. MAIN LINE

The main line of the railway network begins in Piraeus, runs through Central Greece towards the north, leading to the borders with FYROM through Idomeni. The main line shows diversity in the infrastructure of its individual sections:

PIRAEUS - ATHENS: This section, about 10 km long, is composed of a double railway corridor, renovated with modern superstructure materials.

ATHENS - OINOI - TITHOREA: The railway infrastructure includes a double rail corridor with single track, 156 km long.

TITHOREA - DOMOKOS: This section is one of the most inaccessible parts of the network, because of the mountainous relief. The infrastructure includes a single line with relatively old superstructure materials, with a total length of 121.5 km. The route includes stone tunnels and steel bridges -characteristic examples are those of Gorgopotamos and Asopos rivers.

In the near future, a new alignment will be constructed in the route Tithorea - Domokos, a project implemented in the context of the railway network modernization.

DOMOKOS - PALAIOFARSALOS - LARISSA - PLATI -THESSALONIKI: This double electrified railway corridor is 232.5 km long. The infrastructure is renovated with modern superstructure materials that allow speeds of 160 km/h and a maximum axle load of 22.5 tn. This section includes two modern railway tunnels: Platamonas (4,275 m long) and Tempe (5,500 m long).

THESSALONIKI - IDOMENI: The railway connection between Greece and FYROM is achieved through this line: a single electrified railway line 71 km long.

MAIN LINE BRANCHES 

On the main railway line, there are the following branches serving other regional cities:

OINOI - CHALKIDA: It is a renovated single railway line with modern superstructure materials, electrified, 21.3 km long.

II. SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE


KIATO - CORINTH - ANO LIOSSIA - METAMORPHOSSIS - EL. VENIZELOS AIRPORT

The infrastructure of the Suburban Railway is composed of a double standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 269.7km long, constructed with modern superstructure materials (UIC 60 rails and B70 concrete monoblock sleepers). The line is electrified and signaled, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h and a maximum axle load of 22.5 tn.

SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE BRANCHES

N. IKONIO - THRIASSIO: The Ikonio line is a key branch of the network as it connects the port of N. Ikonio, which handles significant freight traffic, with the Thriassio Pedio Freight Center and the High Speed Railway Line (HSRL) that connects to the backbone network.

III. WESTERN MACEDONIA


PLATY - EDESSA - AMYNTAIO - FLORINA

The infrastructure of the Platy-Florina section is composed of a single standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 156.6 km long, of which approximately 60.1 km are constructed with old superstructure materials and the remaining 96.5 km. with modern materials. The maximum speed is 120 km/h and can carry a maximum axle load of 20 tn.

Between Plati and Florina, there are 16 tunnels and 34 bridges (with a span > 4 m), and 14 stations serving passenger transportation.

WESTERN MACEDONIA NETWORK BRANCHES

FLORINA (MESSONISSI) - N. CAUCASUS (operation temporarily suspended)
The infrastructure of the line segment Messonissi - N. Caucasus is composed of a single standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 12.9 km long, constructed with modern superstructure materials. It includes 5 bridges (with a span > 4 m). N. Caucasus RS is a border post.
The line segment Messonissi - N. Caucasus has been integrated in the active networks but with operation temporarily suspended.

AMYNTAIO - KOZANI (Km 32+500 – Kozani under construction)
The infrastructure of the line segment Amyntaio - Kozani is composed of a single standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 60 km long, constructed with modern superstructure materials (UIC 60 rails and B70 concrete monoblock sleepers). The line has a maximum speed of 120 km/h and can carry a maximum axle load of 20 tn.

The line segment Amyntaio - Kozani includes 4 bridges with a span > 4 m.

Since January 2014, the line operates up to Azotos RS (Km 31+608 of Amyntaio-Kozani section). 

The remaining part up to Kozani RS has been integrated in the networks under construction pursuant to GG (2160/30-08-2013).

IV. EASTERN MACEDONIA

THESSALONIKI - STRYMONAS - ALEXANDROUPOLIS

The infrastructure of the line Thessaloniki - Strymonas - Alexandroupolis is composed of a single standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 442 km long, of which 116 km are constructed with modern superstructure materials (UIC 54 rails and B70 concrete monoblock sleepers) and the remaining 326 km with old infrastructure (twin-block concrete, wooden and steel sleepers, and UIC 54-UIC 50 rails). The line is signaled from Thessaloniki to Strymonas, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h and can carry a maximum axle load of 22.5 tn.

The Thessaloniki - Strimonas - Alexandroupolis line includes 36 tunnels and 251 bridges (span > 4 m), and 28 stations serving passenger transportation. Between Drama and Xanthi, the line runs next to Nestos river, which is an especially scenic route.

ALEXANDROUPOLIS-ORMENIO

The line Alexandroupolis - Ormenio is 178.5 km long and the larger part is renovated with modern superstructure materials (UIC54 rails – B70 monoblock sleepers and SKL 14 spring anchors). The superstructure differs in terms of materials (wooden or steel sleepers and rails of various types), along a total length of about 30 km.

The line includes 70 bridges (span > 4 m) and 13 stations serving passenger transportation.

EASTERN MACEDONIA NETWORK BRANCHES

STRYMONAS - PROMACHONAS

The branch connects Greece to Bulgaria through Promachonas.

The infrastructure of the line is composed of a single standard gauge (1,435 mm) track, 14.5 km long, constructed with old superstructure materials (S33B rails and S33 steel sleepers). The line is signaled with a maximum speed of 100 km/h and can carry a maximum axle load of 20 tn.

The line Strymonas – Promachonas includes 2 tunnels and 5 bridges, and 2 stations serving passenger transportation.

V. PELOPONNESE NETWORK

AG. VASILIOS - AG. ANDREAS (PATRAS): It is the line of the Suburban Railway of Patras, 11.6 km long. The maximum speed is 70 km/h.

PATRAS - PYRGOS - KALONERO- ZEFGOLATIO - KALAMATA: The infrastructure of the Western Peloponnese line connects the cities of Patras and Kalamata. It is a metric line with old superstructure and allows a maximum axle load of 14 tn.

CORINTH (OLD STATION) - ARGOS - TRIPOLI - ZEFGOLATIO: The railway links Corinth to Tripoli through this single line, which is newly renovated with modern superstructure materials. It belongs to OSE’s active network and has a total length of 121.4 km.

CORINTH (OLD STATION) - CORINTH (NEW STATION): It is a mixed gauge line connecting the metric line of the Peloponnese with the new Suburban HSRL.
AG. ANARGYROI - ELEFSINA (Mixed Gauge Line).

PELOPONNESE NETWORK BRANCHES

DIAKOPTO - KALAVRYTA: The railway line Diakopto - Kalavryta is a distinct line of the network, not only because of the natural beauty of the route, but also because of the specific technical specifications. The width of the line is only 0.75 m and its total length 22.3 km, whereas train movement along the large longitudinal gradients (up to 175‰) is ensured by a toothing system applied along a total length of 3.4 km.

PYRGOS- OLYMPIA: Metric single line, 20.84 km long.

PYRGOS - KATAKOLO: Metric single line, 12.3 km long.

The route KATAKOLO -PYRGOS - OLYMPIA is of tourist interest, and Katakolo is a combined transport hub, since a significant number of cruise ships visit its port, carrying tourists who wish to visit the ancient site of Olympia.

The railway line ARGOS - NAFPLIO is a single metric line, 11 km long, renovated with modern superstructure materials.

PELOPONNESE NETWORK BRANCHES WITH OPERATION TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

The metric network of the Peloponnese whose operation is temporarily suspended, as defined in Law 3891/10, contains the following lines:

These lines are potentially active. Especially for the line Isthmos -Loutraki, of tourist interest, OSE SA has already designed the line transition from metric to standard gauge, the installation of electricification and signaling, so that it can become part of the Athens Suburban Railway.

VI. PELION LINE (600 mm gauge)

The Pelion line is one of the narrowest tracks in the world, with a gauge of just 60 cm. The train of Pelion, as it is typically known, runs through one of the most scenic routes of tourist interest in the entire Greek railway network, since it follows the mountain trail from Ano Lechonia to Milies, 15 km long, crossing the lush slopes covered with dense vegetation.

II. OSE NETWORK MAINTENANCE PROJECTS
The maintenance of the railway network until today has been performed both by maintenance contracts awarded according to the procedure laid down by the European Union and Greek legislation on public works (servicing) and by direct labor in small-scale interventions.

OSE SA, as the primary agency responsible for the maintenance of the railway network, in view of the major developments in the railway market, is planning a new maintenance model of railway infrastructure which aims at upgrading the network and at optimizing safety and reliability, as well as at ensuring the interoperability of the railway network, so that its operation complies with international standards.

The implementation of the new strategy will achieve the following:

Increasing operating speed, resulting in the increased capacity and reliability of the network.

Faster and more secure cross-border connections to neighboring countries (Bulgaria, Turkey, FYROM) and through them to Central Europe.

The development of combined transport by rail synergy with other basic infrastructure, such as ports (Piraeus (Ikonio), Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Patras) and logistics centers (Thriassio Pedio, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis), which will increase railway freight traffic, thus promoting Greece as a major European - freight axis from the Mediterranean to Europe, thus contributing to its development.


III. NETWORK EXPANSION PROJECTS IN PROGRESS

MAIN LINE

TITHOREA - DOMOKOS

The wider project involves the construction of the New Double High Speed Railway Line Tithorea - Lianokladi – Domokos, which replaces the mountainous part of the existing single line, 122 km. long, with a New Double High Speed Railway Line, 106 km long.
The new alignment is designed for speeds of 160-200 km/h and begins from Tithorea RS, heads eastwards through Kallidromo mountain with a twin tunnel (each tube 9,036 m long) and following a flat trail through the valley of Sperchios river, finally ends at Lianokladi RS. Then it crosses Orthris mountain with a twin tunnel (each tube 6,380 m long) and following a flat trail through the dried Xyniada lake climbs the mountain massif of Domokos up to Domokos RS.


The physical object of the project includes:

• 4 single track tunnels with a total length 30,837.00 m (Kallidromo and Orthris Tunnels)
• 12 double track tunnels with a total length of 44,99.61 m
• 18 double line Cut & Cover with a total length of 2,374.75 m
• 6 single line Cut & Cover with a total length of 1,708.00 m
• 49 railway bridges with a total length of 6,086.88 m
• 32 grade-separated crossings with a total length of 2,764.50 m
• 2 New Railway Stations in Molos and Agios Stefanos, and two new stops in Aggeies and Thavmakos
• Signalling, telecommanding, ETCS-level 1, telecommunications and electrification of the line

The project will contribute to the following:
• significant journey time reduction between Athens and Thessaloniki (about 1 hour)
• utilizing the investments made both in this section and in the overall PATHE/P, given that this is the last section under construction which contributes to the modernization of the central Greek railway corridor Athens-Thessaloniki
• improving railway competitiveness due to a significant improvement in service quality
• environmental and energy benefits, by diverting the transportation work from the road to the railway, but also because of using electric instead of diesel locomotives
• increasing train traffic safety because of signaling and ETCS system application
• significant business benefits for OSE SA (such as operating cost savings due to using electric instead of diesel locomotives, automatic signaling, etc.)
• increase in OSE revenue due to the increased traffic volumes.

POLYKASTRO - IDOMENI

The global project involves:

• infrastructure projects for a double standard gauge line deviation, approximately 21 km long, in Polykastro - Idomeni section of Thessaloniki - Idomeni  line
• superstructure and electrification works in the single line 
• construction of new Polykastro RS, railway stop Mikro Dasos and renovation of Idomeni RS
• adaptation of signaling-telecommanding and installation of ETCS level 1 (new deviation)
• adjustment of fixed telecommunications in the deviation and interfacing with the existing telecommunications network of Thessaloniki  - Kilkis section.

 The completion of the project will achieve the following:

 • Operational upgrading of Thessaloniki-Idomeni line, which is one of the major freight cross-border connections with the rest of Europe, by improving the connection of the Greek railway network to those of neighboring Balkan countries and promoting international transport by rail 

• Reducing journey time
• Increasing train traffic safety because of signaling and ETCS system application

• Environmental and energy benefits by diverting the transportation work from the road to the railway
• Significant business benefits for OSE SA (cost savings due to automatic signaling, etc.).


D. NEW NETWORK PROJECTS - PLANNING

PROJECT: Construction of New Double High Speed Railway Line Tithorea - Lianokladi – Domokos

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The global project involves:
• Execution of necessary expropriation
• Infrastructure works for the double standard gauge railway deviation, 21 km long, in section Polykastro - Idomeni of Thessaloniki– Idomeni line
• Supply of superstructure materials for the whole section of about 21 km
• Superstructure and electrification works for the single line
• Construction of new Polykastro RS, Mikro Dasos stop and renovation of Idomeni RS
• Adaptation of signaling - telecommanding and installation of ETCS level 1 (new deviation)
• Adjustment of fixed telecommunications in the railway deviation and interfacing with the existing telecommunication network in section Thessaloniki -Polykastro
• Planting works.

PROJECT: Construction of new double railway line with signaling - telecommanding in Kiato – Rododafni section

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The physical object is the construction of the new railway line in section Kiato RS– Aigio tunnel exit (Rododafni). With the construction of this project the existing metric single line will be replaced by a new double standard gauge high speed line, with signaling - telecommunications - telecommanding, approximately 72 km long, in Kiato - Rododafni section.

The global project involves:
• Execution of necessary expropriation 
• Infrastructure works for a double standard gauge line, 72 km long, in section Kiato - Rododafni
• Construction of 6 tunnels with an approximate total length of 11,000 m, 13 Cut & Covers with an approximate total length of 1,710 m, 8 escape tunnels with an approximate total length of 2,150 m and structures, the most important of which are approximately 18 (railway) bridges and 60 grade-separated crossing for the vertical roads network
• Construction of 4 railway stations (Xylokastro, Akrata, Diakofto and Aigio) and 6 stops (Diminio, Lykoporia, Ligia - Derveni area, Platanos, Elaionas, Eliki)
• Supply of superstructure materials
• Superstructure works (laying / regularization of double standard gauge line)
• Signaling works by installing a modern two-way signaling system of telecommanding and telecommunications, and manufacturing the new wired telecommunications network.

• Reducing journey time
• Improving railway operating conditions
• Increasing the transmission capacity of the line and reliability of service
• Improving security conditions during line operation for both trains and pedestrians / vehicles, by installing a modern signaling system and eliminating level crossings.

PROJECT: Construction of a new double railway line in section Rododafni - Psathopyrgos (Km 91+500 to Km 113+000) and Panagopoula tunnel.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The physical object of the project includes:
• Construction of infrastructure for the new double railway line in section Rododafni - Psathopyrgos (Km 91+500 to Km 113+000) including the formation layer and superstructure substrate for the NHSRL
• Construction of side and vertical road network of the NHSRL, for traffic restoration purposes, including small structures, sewage and rain water drainage works
• Construction of Railway Bridges, except for bridge G3 (over the New National Road), overpasses and underpasses, pedestrian crossings and river bridges
• Construction of small structures, permanent and temporary retaining walls, pile walls, etc. of the NHSRL
• Construction of drainage-sewage works in the NHSRL including the restoration of the local irrigation system, wherever it is interrupted by the construction works of the NHSRL
• Construction of the twin Panagopoula tunnel, its entrance and exit structures and the emergency exit tunnel.

PROJECT: Construction of the Thriassio Pedio Freight Center

The Thriassio Pedio Freight Center is an integrated management and movement center for containers, automobiles and general cargo. It is located in the Thriassio Pedio area, Attica, and occupies a total area of about 2,600,000 m2[L1].
The Thriassio Pedio Freight Center is connected by railway with the freight port of Piraeus (N. Ikonio), which is the largest freight port in Greece and the largest investment of OSE SA; this investment will contribute to the development of the country’s freight transport.

The project is developed in two operational phases:
The construction of Phase A’ of operation includes railway works, infrastructure and superstructure (39,200 m of line, 2,600 m of line with slabtrack, 126 turnouts), road and parking network, networks for water supply, sewerage, rain water drainage, fire fighting and irrigation, low and medium voltage distribution network, full installations for lighting, fuel gas and compressed air, wagon and container washing facilities, two bridges over Yannoula stream, extension of the pedestrian underpass in Aspropyrgos RS, road connection of Thriassio Pedio with Attiki Odos and NATO Avenue, Aspropyrgos RS landscaping works, etc.).

The Thriassio Pedio Freight Center was connected to the newly constructed single standard gauge railway line with the freight port of Piraeus in N. Ikonio (standard gauge line, 17km long, design speed 90 km/h).
The works of Operation Phase A’ have been completed and were commissioned to OSE in early June 2014.

The construction of Operation Phase B’ of Thriassio Pedio includes additional groups of lines, remaining sewerage and rain water drainage works, building works, electromechanical equipment, electronic equipment and IT equipment, material handling equipment, complete line signaling, and complete electrification. In addition, it includes the construction of Zefiri RS (within an existing Cut & Cover type of structure involving vertical accesses connecting the underground station to the surface reception area).

PROJECT BENEFITS / FEASIBILITY
• Increasing the international freight traffic in the railway network and particularly combined transport, taking into account the construction of the Thriassio Pedio railway connection to the port of N. Ikonio.
• Significant positive impact on the environment and urban development due to the relocation of the main container terminal outside the center of Athens and the parallel diversion of significant freight volumes from the road to the railway, which is the most environmental-friendly mode of transport.
• Railway service to residents of the wider area due to the construction of Zefyri RS and and improvement of their accessibility to Athens / Thessaloniki and Corinth / Patras through PATHE/P.


NEW NETWORK PROJECTS 

1. Completion of electrification and signaling of PATHE/P (Patras - Athens - Thessaloniki - Idomeni / Promachonas)
2. Upgrading of the railway line Larissa – Volos with electrification 
3. Electrification and signaling in section Palaiofarsalos - Kalambaka
